Bacchus Pumpkin Eater.....what more could a Mastiff want?

Aaahh...the good life. Basking in the warm sun of an Autumn day..with a pumpkin to chew on...

Bacchus' Temperament exemplifies all that is good about the Mastiff breed....
Bacchus is a very special 5-year old, 130 lb VERY LOYAL and loving Apricot Mastiff boy. He is neutered, up to date on his vaccinations, and micro-chipped.  He loves people, children, and other dogs.  He is okay with cats, although he sometimes barks at them briefly.
Bacchus is a very special Mastiff boy that has had a difficult life. Many of us humans also have 'something' to challenge us physically but still fully enjoy our lives. That is how it is with Bacchus now that SSMR has entered his life. Bacchus was diagnosed with a progressive neurological condition in October 2006- however his condition has been relatively stable since his diagnosis almost a year ago with the love and care of his foster home. Though Bacchus has poly-neuropathy he doesn't seem to notice his limitations and only wants someone to enjoy life with- to love and to love him in return.

Note: Because we consider Bacchus to be special, he will be placed in the right home as a long-term foster. Not as a standard SSMR adoption.

Q: What kind of personality does Bacchus have? ? What is life like with Bacchus?
Mastiffs as a breed, are known for their undying loyalty - and Bacchus is the most loyal of Mastiffs you could ever find. Bacchus' foster mom Rhonda says "Bacchus is truly a velcro dog! " He will follow you anywhere. He even lies outside of the bathroom door- just waiting for her to come out. Once when it was raining outside and Rhonda could not take her daily fitness walk, she decided to try to walk inside the house instead.
Bacchus actually followed her on her somewhat puzzling path through the house several times until he could not keep up with her - probably wondering about the intelligence of humans- so he picked a central spot in the kitchen where he could lie and watch her all the time as she was walking- and in a spot where she had to step over him each time she made her trek through the house!
One humorous quirk about Bacchus is that he likes to be vaccumed. It's all about getting attention-  If he gets attention he doesn't care what is being done to him- as long as it involves being with you.  When Bacchus wants attention he puts a paw in your lap or waves it at you. He is quite good at gently letting you know what he wants.
He gets soooo excited when either of his foster parents get home- and he beats his tail to a very consistent rhythm, which just gets faster and faster as they speak to him. He is so loving that it is hard to resist returning the feeling! He also makes a good pillow or foot warmer. It's hard to be depressed around Bacchus. His adoration is unconditional.
Q: What does Bacchus' health condition mean for his new owner?
Bacchus is not currently on any medication nor is he receiving special medical treatments of any kind.

Bacchus prefers carpeted to slick surfaces for best footing. He is not able to negotiate stairs like other dogs so needs a home with very few stairs- or where his owner is willing to build a ramp for him if they do have many stairs.

His breathing can sound labored sometimes and he walks with an awkward gait. He needs to see a vet at least twice a year and needs help to get in and out of the vehicle when going out and about- he really loves to go for car rides because it means he is going with YOU.  Sometimes Bacchus will gag when eating- but he knows how to deal with it. You just have to keep an eye on him when he is eating treats or food to be sure he doesn't choke.

Q: Does Bacchus like any particular special treats or chew toys?
Bacchus LOVES pig ears, rawhides, and pizza crusts! His favorite toys are Galileo bones and rope toys. He tries to clean bowls and plates when we are finished, but he just makes them slobbery. He loves to get cheese around any medicine he has ever had to take or a piece of bread now.
Q: Can Bacchus he hold his own in play with other dogs or does he need a quieter home with more laid back dogs?
Bacchus really does like to play, although Rhonda's own dogs quickly seemed to understand that they can’t get too rough with him. Bacchus  also attempts to play tug-of-war with them, but always loses! Which the other dogs love, of course.

Bacchus longs for a family of his own to love and cherish him, so that he will be able to live out the rest of his life happily and comfortably.
