Caesar is a true sweet southern gentleman who loves people and other dogs. An 8 or 9 year old English Mastiff, he lived his whole life with his owner and another Mastiff, Reeses, until his owner unfortunately passed away in June, leaving no one to care for him and Reeses. He spent a month living in a crate at the vet office until Mastiff Rescue was contacted and accepted him and Reeses in for fostering until a forever home could be found. Poor Caesar was separated from his sister and went through some depression in the beginning, but has since returned to his love for life and can be found bearing a smile all the time. He was spoiled by his owner, that is sure, and is looking for an accepting home to help him live out his retirement years. He is truly a calm and "easy" dog from a caretaker's point of view, despite his age. Any home that would be willing to love this hunk of wrinkles would rewarded ten-fold with his affection and loyalty. Caesar is looking for a forever home where he can spend his retirement years. He is being fostered in Key West, FL.

Other dogs: Caesar absolutely loves the other dogs we have observed him to be around- both big and small. His foster family feels confident that he would do great with any other dogs, as long as they were accepting of him. He lived with another younger female Mastiff in his original home. He routinely goes out to Truman Annex Pier at sunset to play with the other dogs out there and he is nothing but smiles there whole way there! Though he is calm and slow in the house, his inner puppy truly comes out when he is allowed to play freely with other dogs. If you already have a dog in the home, Caesar would be delighted to join you!

Cats: He has a bit of an interest in cats, as observed while on walks. It would probably be best that Caesar be placed in a home without cats, as he would probably chase them.

Other animals: Caesar lived next door to goats in his initial foster home and would visit them at the fenceline for some conversation. His reaction to the wild roosters running around Key West has been a bit indifferent at times, with some occasional interest while on walks.

Children: Caesar's foster mom has observed that he LOVES the children of all ages and sizes that he has been around and believes he would really thrive in a home with children to love and play with. He is all smiles when around kids and hopes to find a forever home that would give him a few to take care of.

Diet: Caesar is currently eating about 4 cups of dry dog food per day with some canned food mixed in. He is currently free fed, meaning we leave the bowl full of food all day for him because he is not a piggie. He does not exhibit food aggression at all. He also recieves some joint supplements (Glucosamine and Chondroitin 1500mg per day) mixed in with his food to help ease his joints.

Walks:  Caesar is a great walker, albiet a bit slow. He does not pull on the leash, in fact he is so easy to walk, my neighbor's 3 year old son can do it. When walking past other dogs and people, he obediently stays alongside you, not advancing towards them unless you allow him to go over to say hello. Walks between 1 block to a mile seem to work well for him. He really enjoys walking to outdoor eateries and sitting obediently while you dine! A favorite of his is Dog Beach...take him there on a walk and he is your best friend forever!

Health: Caesar is an older dog but is otherwise very healthy for an 8-9 year old mastiff. He is about 180 lbs right now and that seems to be a manageable weight for his frame. Caesar sleeps on a comfortable thick dog bed and prefers carpet over hardwood floors if he has a choice. He can handle some stairs, but would prefer not to climb too many. A single-story home would be ideal for him, but not a requirement. He takes his flea/tick and heartworm preventative on the 18th of each month.

House manners: Caesar is a terrific house dog who prefers to stay in the same spot for a while. One of his favorite places to hang out is on the front porch so he can watch people walk by. He doesn't bark at passersby, but rather smiles with curiosity. He will gladly sleep on his dog bed on the floor next to your bed. He is perfectly housebroken and does not climb on the furniture, and not at all destructive. He does not jump up on people when greeting them but rather approaches with a big smile and a friendly personality. He will occasionally bark or "speak" to you if he would like some food, or he would like to go outside, or if he would simply like you scratch his neck. He does not drool too much for a Mastiff, and is a "neat" drinker when drinking water from his bowl.

Car rides: Caesar rides great in the car, even for a long 6 hour ride. He can jump into the trunk of a low SUV without assistance, but care should be taken when he jumps down. A ramp would be ideal for his entry and exit. While riding, he stays quietly in the trunk, only getting up every now and then to reposition and then plop back down.

If you wish to adopt me please submit an adoption application here!

Any questions you may have about Caesar can be routed via email to: jenamckay@aol.com or call (334) 477-9024. He is available immediately for adoption through Southern States Mastiff Rescue at www.sosmastiffrescue.org Please visit the website for more information about him and the adoption process. If you are interested in adopting him, make sure you fill out an application online and a volunteer will come to your home and do a home visit as part of the process. Additionally, foster homes are desperately needed for mastiff rescue, so even if you can't adopt right now, maybe you'll consider opening your home to a foster mastiff for a few months until he/she can be adopted to their forever home?
