We piled into the car, two
adults, two girls ages 5 and 7, a male
French Mastiff mix named Gumbo, and a female
German Short-haired Pointer named Tallulah
for the ride from Tampa to Kelly's house in
Dunedin. It took about five seconds for us
to realize that "Phoebe" was the one for us.
Everyone got along well, and we drove home
with three drooling tongues and wagging
tails in the back of our SUV. It took a few
days to pick her name... she was so elegant
and ladylike, nothing seemed to fit.
Finally, we settled upon Dixie LaRoux.
Dixie is so sweet and gentle. The first day
we had her, she let us file her nails with a
Dremel.. and she has trusted us with
everything since! She loves nothing more
than to put her big head on our laps. She
follows us from room to room, hoping to get
one more chance for some petting and kisses.
She doesn't like to give kisses, though she
is a big "sniffer." She listens well
and responds to commands such as sit, stay,
come, lay down, shake, get in your crate,
get back, and give. She is heeling well with
a Halti. She doesn't love it, but it keeps
her from dragging us down the street with
those long legs of hers! She loves to chase
tennis balls and is the first dog we've had
that will actually fetch them and bring them
back! She also ADORES Gumbo and spends a lot
of time playing with him... chasing,
wrestling, sharing toys, and sometimes
napping together. She likes to watch The Dog
Whisperer with us. She also has funny water
drinking quirks.. she'd rather drink from a
hose, sprinkler, or even the rain than from
a bowl. I have caught her sitting in the
middle of the yard, licking at the
raindrops. Her weight has stabilized at
about 115 pounds; we were worried that she
wasn't gaining more but have decided that
she just must have some Dane in her and
she's going to be tall and skinny.
She is our love, she
is a delight, and we can't imagine life
without her. Thanks, SSMR!!! |
