From Rayma's Adoptive Family We just wanted to tell others how great our new family member is. We adopted Rayma in August '06 and she is the perfect addition to our family. We were looking for a companion for our beagle when we found the SSMR web site. I found the adoption process simple enough and everyone was eager to help answer all our questions.
After about two weeks she finally started eating eagerly. It seemed to me that she must have had to compete for food where she was before, so she was never quite sure what to do with a full bowl right in front of her! I have come to believe she was abused by her previous owner as she is very frightened of dark hair and dark clothing. She still acts jumpy around people that fit this description. She will flinch when someone makes a sudden move near her head. According to all the dog behavior books we have read, the best thing to do is just keep loving her and reassuring her that she is safe now. She has become my shadow. Everywhere I go she goes. Which can get tricky when you try to go in the bathroom! She has filled out very nicely and is currently weighing around 145-150. She loves our beagle Zack and the two of them look forward to walks every morning and evening in fact she is quite insistent about walk time! She will lean up against my leg until she pushes me toward the closet where the leashes are kept. Both dogs love to ride in the car and always want to go along to pick up our son in the car line! Something about mastiff's just draws attention, everyone wants to get a better look at her. Although she was not used to being inside she was easily house trained, just keeping a consistent schedule helped. Thank you so much to SSMR for helping us find our girl and saving her from those who didn't deserve to have her! Oh and Rayma loves our tomcat Demarco, I know cats
can be an issue with some mastiff but they get along great, touching
noses whenever they meet. |
